Maximilian Günther takes 2nd at Bahrain in the FIA F2 Sprint Race

BWT Arden take their first podium of the 2018 FIA Formula 2 Championship at the Sakhir International Circuit

Maximilian Günther took his BWT Arden machine to 2nd position in the FIA Formula 2 Sprint Race at Bahrain, after a great demonstration of tyre management.

Günther started from Pole Position, due to the partially reversed grid that forms the starting line-up for the Sprint Race, after he finished in 8th position in the Feature Race yesterday. Teammate Nirei Fukuzumi started from 18th after his time penalty in yesterdays race.

Günther made a good start, albeit was passed by the fast starting Nyck de Vries in the run down into turn one. He maintained 2nd position in the early stages of the race, as all drivers were managing their medium compound Pirelli tyres in the 23 lap race.
Fukuzumi made up good ground at the start of the race, taking advantage of a few slow starting drivers to elevate himself up into 13th position at the end of the first lap.

Russian Time's Artem Markelov slipped passed Günther on lap 6, demoting him to 3rd position as de Vries established a lead over the chasing pack.
On lap 12 however, de Vries pitted his Prema Racing machine for the soft compound tyres - attempting to replicat a strategy used by 2017 winner Charles Leclerc.

Günther stayed out, running in 2nd position and keeping Markelov honest with the Pink Panther BWT Arden filling his mirrors. The Carlin duo of Sergio Sette Camara and Lando Norris began to close in on Günther, as he went through a difficult phase in tyre wear resulting in a few lock-ups at turn one.

Fukuzumi continued to make progress through the pack, as the Honda Junior moved himself inside the top ten.

Günther together with his engineer managed to overcome the issues and pull out of DRS threat from his rivals behind, as well as reeling in leader Markelov. He pulled out a safe gap to secure a superb podium and 2nd position on his debut weekend in FIA Formula 2.

Teammate Fukuzumi managed to make it a double points scoring race for BWT Arden - finishing 8th position to secure himself the final championship point in the Sprint Race.

BWT Arden currently sit 4th overall in the Team's Championship with 17 points after a strong opening round, with Günther and Fukuzumi 4th and 12th in the Driver's Championship standings respectively.

The next round of the FIA Formula 2 Championship takes place on the 27-29 April at the Baku City Circuit in Azerbaijan.
