Simmons secures maiden podium at season Finale

Rookie Ayrton dominates Rookie Class in final round at Brands Hatch GP

Brands Hatch saw the final round of the British F4 Championship, and with 6 in contention of winning the Drivers Championship, the pressure was on. Luis Leeds was one of the 6 in with a chance of winning the title. Friday’s mixed weather practice saw Rafael Martins and Ayrton Simmons with incredible pace, sitting in the top 5 for a majority of the sessions.

With a very wet qualifying, the boys didn’t allow the weather to hinder their focus. Leeds qualified in 3rd, Simmons in 4th, Martins in 5th and Martin in 14th.

Race 1 later that day saw a fantastic start for Simmons despite the challenging conditions as the heavens opened. Simmons was setting some impressive lap times, being 2nd quickest on track and finishing 5th, but also took the Rookie win. Martins also had an incredible start, he was able to move forward at the start of the race to dive into 3rd. Martins had quite a lonely race with a large gap behind him, but he reel in Fewtrell in front towards the end of the race -Rafael crossed the finish line in 4th. Leeds had small mistake as the safety car period was coming to an end as he tried to get a run on the driver ahead, causing him to run into the gravel. Leeds recovered to take 10th. Martin managed to recover from a mistake on the first lap which caused him to lose time to the rest of the field, but he maintained 14th as the chequered flag dropped.

Sunday started with Race 2, Simmons lined up on the grid in 3rd, Martins in 4th, Leeds in 10th and Martin in 14th. Simmons got off to a bad start, dropping back a few positions, but he soon made a few good overtakes to take 6th. Martins had a great start, diving up into 4th, fending off Fielding who was closely behind. With a close 4-car battle for 2nd place, Martins maintained his position in 4th. Leeds struggled in the conditions, finding it difficult to overtake due to the wet track off the racing line. Martin had a good start and a close 3 way battle. As the Chequered flag fell, Martins came across the line in 4th, Simmons in 6th, Leeds in 11th and Martin in 13th.  

Race 3; the final race of the season. The starting grid saw Simmons 2nd, Leeds 5th, Martins 9th and Martin 14th. Simmons got an incredible start, holding his ground from the cars that shadowed behind him. As Fielding dived through the pack and was on the back of Simmons, he didn’t allow this to phase him and maintained his 2nd place position as the chequered flag dropped. Leeds had a battle on his hands, but he kept his 5th place position – and finishing 3rd in the Drivers Championship. Martins crossed the line in 10th, despite some impressive lap times, and Martin in 13th.

Simmons took his maiden podium in 2nd, and also took all 3 Rookie Class wins to cap off the season.
